Steps To Take After You Have Been Involved In An Accident

If you’ve been involved in a vehicle accident, it’s important to take certain steps to ensure the safety of everyone involved, document the incident, and navigate the aftermath. Here are the typical steps to take after a vehicle accident:

  1. Ensure Safety: Check for injuries: First and foremost, check yourself and others involved in the accident for injuries. Call 911 immediately if anyone is seriously hurt. Move to a safe location. If possible and it’s safe to do so, move your vehicle to the side of the road or a safe location to avoid further accidents.
  2. Call the Police: Contact law enforcement. Call the local police or highway patrol to report the accident. Request an officer to come to the scene and file a report.
  3. Exchange Information: Exchange information with the other driver(s). Get the following details from all parties involved:
    • Name
    • Contact information (phone number, address)
    • Insurance information (company name and policy number)
    • Vehicle details (make, model, license plate number)
  4. Document the Scene: Take photos: Use your phone or a camera to document the accident scene, vehicle damage, road conditions, and any relevant road signs or signals. Gather information from any witnesses, if available.
  5. File an Accident Report: Report the accident to your insurance company. Contact your insurance company as soon as possible to report the accident and start the claims process.
  6. Cooperate with Law Enforcement: Provide information to the police. Answer the questions of the responding officer truthfully and accurately. Follow any instructions given by law enforcement.
  7. Seek Medical Attention: Even if you don’t feel seriously injured, consider seeking medical evaluation after the accident. Some injuries may not be immediately apparent, and documenting your condition can be important for insurance claims.
  8. Make Notes: Write down your own account of the accident while the details are still fresh in your mind. Include information about the sequence of events, weather conditions, and any relevant statements made by the other driver or witnesses.
  9. Consult with an Attorney: If you’re unsure about your rights or the handling of the accident, consider consulting with a personal injury attorney.
  10. Keep Records: Maintain a file with all documentation related to the accident, including medical bills, repair estimates, correspondence with insurance companies, and the police report.
  11. Tow Your Vehicle for Repairs: Have your vehicle towed to our collision center so we can work with your insurance company to repair your vehicle. We work with every insurance company. Our contact information is TDG Collision, 3625 S Broadway, Edmond OK 73013, 405-926-3181.
  12. Repair Your Vehicle:  If it is still safe to drive your vehicle, arrange for vehicle repairs with a reputable body shop. The body shop can guide you through the repair process.
  13. Follow Through: Continue to work with your insurance company, follow medical advice, and, if necessary, seek legal representation to resolve any disputes or claims.

Remember that the specific steps you need to take may vary depending on your location, the severity of the accident, and local laws and regulations. Always prioritize safety and follow the guidance of law enforcement and your insurance company.
